Millions made plans to start 2018 with new resolutions and goals. While these goals are important, the reality is that many people will fail to follow through with them in the first days and weeks of the new year. Some will even decide to wait until next year to start with their new habits.
But for the Christian, it can be different.
As Bible believers, we have the opportunity to make a new start every week. God gave us the Sabbath as a gift of time—time to spend with Him and in His Word. It’s a time to re-evaluate our lives and renew our commitment to Christ. We can have a fresh start in our Christian experience as we take time to honor God’s holy day, to rest in His gift of salvation, and to remember all that He has done for us.
Christ invites us to take advantage of the holy time we find each week in the Sabbath. He said, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27, 28). When we accept Christ as the Lord of our lives, we can rest in the blessings of Sabbath rest each week.
Sabbath is more than just a time for rest and refreshment; it is a promise of a new world, a world where everything and everyone is in harmony. The Bible says, “As the new heavens and the new earth which I will make shall remain before Me … it shall come to pass that from one New Moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, all flesh shall come to worship before Me” (Isaiah 66:22, 23). Sabbath gives us hope and security despite the chaos in the world around us.
Sabbath reminds us of our roots, it reorients us to our present, and points us forward to our future in the paradise to come. This weekly appointment with God is foundational to our faith in these unstable times.
